JR. CAD DESIGNER (SOLIDWORKS)

Responsible for the design and development of new products and the maintenance of existing engineering projects and programs. The Junior Design Engineering will report to the Design Engineering Manager.

 

Key Accountability and Responsibilities:

 

  • This role involves researching, designing, developing, and producing technical specifications and drawings. As an essential part of the manufacturing process, this position is responsible for the development of new products and the modification of existing components for manufacturability.

  • Continually seek out new opportunities to improve and optimize design parameters to maximize manufacturing efficiency in accordance with DFA / DFM practices.

  • The ability to work as part of a team is crucial as the role requires coordination and communication other departments including buyers, production staff, Program and Project Managers.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Create assembly drawings, component details, cut lists and bills of material.

  • Develop CNC tool paths for laser cut components.

  • Reverse engineer customer products.

  • Select and recommend mechanical hardware.

  • Liaise with customers, clients and engineering support staff on product specifications.

  • Developing creative solutions to technical design problems.

  • Assist in the preparation of RFQ’s providing support in the development of cost estimates.

  • Ensure drawings and designs are created accurately based on information provided and validate instructions for accuracy and consistency.

  • Work as part of a team and participate company wide continuous process improvement initiatives.

 

Knowledge and Skills:

 

Knowledge:

 

  • Knowledge of CAD, automated design software e.g., PDM,

  • DFA / DFM methodologies (Design for Assembly, Design for Manufacturability)

  • Aware of industry standard practices and automated design technology changes and advancements.

  • Knowledge of metal fabrication technical processes, equipment and work flow is required.

 

Skills:

 

  • Proficiency with 2D & 3D CAD (Primarily SolidWorks)

  • Strong technical knowledge regarding machining and fabrication processes.

  • Possess strong communication and presentation skills both verbal and written

  • Analytical approach to problem-solving

  • The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under highly pressured situations and consistently meet strict deadlines and schedules.

  • WHMIS training.

 

Education:

 

  • University or College degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.

 

Communication:

 

  • Other departmental managers

  • Production staff

  • Clients and Customers

  • Industry association members

  • key external suppliers

 

Working Conditions:

  • Required to complete tasks within tight deadlines and changing priorities

  • Limited travel

  • Primarily an office environment with daily work at computer station

  • Some production floor time required to assess product requiring the use of PPE (personal protective equipment)
